Why Soulo

The background to Soulo

Soulo was established in 2021.

There is little doubt that the Covid-19 pandemic played its part, when much of the world was able to reflect on loved ones that had passed and how we would move on post-pandemic.

It seemed to the founders of Soulo that the process of memorialization and remembrance in the digital age, had not moved on like other technologies. Many of which, have made such huge strides in recent years.

Certainly, there was no uniform way to memorialize online. And some of the traditional ways felt well out of touch with the digital age.

For example, an obituary or one person speaking about a loved one, whilst they are heartfelt and compassionate, do not utilize the collaboration and shared tools that we all use every day, across social media and messaging apps.

Keep memories of loved ones alive

So, we set about taking on an enormous challenge and not one we take lightly.

In addition, this challenge is never likely to stop for us, we will be forever tweaking and trying to improve. For that we will need user feedback and we welcome any and all comments on our products.

The key questions we had at the very start and will guide our thinking at this early stage have included:

-How can we move the memorialization space into the digital age?

-How can we progress the process of remembering loved ones into a shared and collaborative experience?

Mobile phones means you will have pictures and videos of numerous people in your life. This is how we can all memorialize together in a collaborative manner to help us remember.

Social media has changed the way many of us view content but with its “right now” mentality, it feels like the giants in this space have also failed to capture the right tone and communal feel that is needed for something so sensitive as remembering loved ones.

How does Soulo work?

The initial product from Soulo is a mobile application.

In November 2022, Soulo released an applicationĀ for both the App Store and Google Play.

On arrival to the app, you have a choice to either create a new page for a loved one, or search for profiles that have already been created.

We imagine that most users will arrive on the application via a share link, that will be to a specific page to memorialize a loved one.

When creating a page for a loved one, the application will go through a number of key questions. You also have the option of creating a page for a living person too.

Once these questions have been filled in, you will be able to create the page for a loved one. The initial process includes a biography, but you can fill this part in later on.

Profile page: Media, Memories, Timeline, Music & Circles

Once a profile is created, there is a whole lot to be aware of.

From the main profile page on Soulo, you will see the next memorial day and you can light a candle for the deceased.

The Media section provides the ability to add pictures and video of your loved one.

Memories affords the possibility to also add pictures and video, with memories of the person you are memorializing. This section is specifically for friends and family to post their memories of the person in question.

The Timeline, which is also something those with access can edit, add to or update, is the place to add life highlights and offers future generations the opportunity to gain a full snapshot of a person’s achievements and life milestones.

Finally, there are two more options from a profile page. Via the Music button you can select tunes and songs that the person in question may have loved or would remind you of them.

Circles is an opportunity to showcase how everyone is connected to your loved one, both friends and family.

A note about Soulo

We are at the very early stages of building Soulo. We are conscious of how important memorializing and remembering loved ones is and we hope to provide the tools to do this in the most sincere and fitting way possible.
